Edison & Ford Winter Estates

Visitors to the Edison & Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers will enjoy 20 acres of historical buildings, historic gardens, the Edison Botanic Research Lab and the Estates Museum. The newly restored buildings include the Edison Main House, Guest House, and Caretaker’s House and the Ford House. The 1929 historic landscape is throughout the property including the award winning Moonlight Garden. The Estates Museum has hundreds of inventions, artifacts and special exhibits.

In addition to providing the opportunity to explore the winter retreats of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, the site offers opportunities for the public to enjoy its park like environment for special events, weddings, corporate functions and meetings, exhibits and ongoing education programming. Throughout the year, this National Register Historic Site, Florida Historic Landmark and Winner of the National Trust for Historic Preservation Restoration Award offers visitors of all ages a chance to step back into “old Florida” and the opportunity to learn more about the world through unique historical, scientific and cultural experiences.

"Treasure Hunt"

Attend a modern-day treasure hunt at the Imaginarium Science Center!

Guests will use modern technology and the tools-of-the-trade to uncover a variety of treasures, as well as the science, history, stories and personalities behind this contemporary quest.

The Imaginarium brings this treasurer hunt to you with an interactive exhibition that puts the gold in your hands! Treasure! explores the history of treasures and treasure hunting, the technology and tools used to find it and the people and personalities that hunt for treasure—like you! Guests will discover artifacts of ancient shipwrecks and take the controls of a remote-operated vehicle (ROV) used to uncover underwater treasures. Re-live the Gold Rush and try panning for gold, then experiment with metal detectors or embark on a geocache using GPS navigation, for a modern-day treasure hunting experience.

Special exhibit features include actual artifacts from shipwrecks and other treasure sites. Visitors embark on their own quest to explore: Underwater Treasure, Buried Treasure, Gold Rushes, Treasures in the Attic, Treasure in Popular Culture, and then move on to The Modern Treasure Hunt and Protecting Treasure.

THEMATIC AREAS OF TREASURE!
Underwater Treasure — Sunken treasure. Actual shipwreck artifacts are part of this module and its highlight is a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) where guests will go hands on to operate an ROV underwater.

Treasure in Popular Culture.
The Modern Treasure Hunt, Contemporary treasure hunting employs exciting technology including metal detectors, but many other tools are also used. In this area, visitors will consider the various ways that people find their way (maps, compasses, landmarks) and other navigation devices, including the Global Positioning System and the meteoric rise of Geocaching.

A family-friendly outdoor activity, geocaching first appeared in 2001 and now boasts hundreds of thousands of enthusiasts.
Protecting Treasure — Once a treasure has been found, how can it be protected?
In addition to this educational and visually impressive interactive exhibition, the Imaginarium offers a supplemental education guide and will hold an exciting supporting event.

Enjoy a 90-minute Buggy Tour through the Babcock Ranch and Telegraph Cypress Swamp. Experienced guides offer in-depth descriptions of birds, animals, plants, and the cattle and horses that are raised on the ranch. Visitors will see alligators, and many other animals living in Southwest Florida. All tours are by reservation only.

In the tour area you'll find a museum featuring Florida history, Babcock operations, and natural history artifacts. There also are exhibits featuring a movie set used by Warner Brothers to film entitled "Just Cause" starring Sean Connery on site.

Seahorse Scuba provides instruction, boats, and equipment for scuba diving. The business in family owned and operated. They sell, rent and service a variety of equipment. The Ostego Bay Foundation's mission is to promote understanding of marine life and the delicate balance of marine ecosystems through education and community involvement. The Science Center offers a walking tour that includes the Center, the Coast Guard station, the waterfront and shrimp boats, and explains how the industry works. Parking is free under the bridge.
